Jack, you mean the Gaelic word Connolly used to mean courage. BUt Michael enlarged its meaning to include integrity, which is of rare and precious quality. And Sue, Tortuga is right, this would make a phenomenal movie script. You ought to co-author with someone who has some experience if you don't feel up to it all yourself.

Jack,
It meant so much to receive your reply regarding the story of your grandfather's brother. It was an incredible task putting the story together, reading the 6 weeks worth of newspapers and talking to family members. I would say it took me at leat 35 -40 hours to put that story together. I was passionate about telling his story and wanted to honor his memory and his family somehow. I visit Calvary often and I will look for your grandfather's grave as well. I am trying to get Michael Connolly's picture to post with the story. What a terrible hardship it all must have been for his family. Thank you for telling me about the Gaelic word for courage being Connolly. I never knew that. I would love to know a little about your grandfather as well. Did he die before Michael Connolly, shortly before?Thank you for your reply. Sincerely, Suzan

Suzan - my sincere thanks to you and Michael's descended family for the unique insight into his life and the events surrounding his death. On our side of the family we knew of Michael's valour and service but you have richly enhanced our knowledge of the events. Michael's brother James was my grandfather. He lies close by his brothers side, a mere 15 feet from Michael's grave in Calvary - a matter which if unknown to Michael's grand daughters may today give them some measure of comfort. James is buried with his wife, Mary Thornton, their three sons, James, Lawrence and John (my father)and their spouses. Each Memorial Day we make a point to visit with Michael while we are there. The origin of Connolly is from the Gaelic word for courage - certainly Michael lived up to his name.

Kind Regards,
Jack Connolly

Yes I am thankful for my friends, a handful who are good friends. I know you sometimes admire me but I am the same as you-a parent who loves their children. I write some of this stuff, though it may be honest and revealing in hopes that I may help other parents deal with some of the same issues they may face. Maybe they won't be so afraid if they read some of my thoughts. If I can help others in their journey, then my journey was not spent alone or in vain. Thanks for your thoughtful response. Your friendship has been a very long one and I am blessed.

Reading your story makes me think back to the time when we first learned about Michael, and how devastating it was to all of us. You know that I admire you tremendously for all of your courage over the years. I have told you many times that I don't know how you do it, and you always say that you would do it if you had to - I am thankful that I don't have to, but I truly sumpathize with ALL of you. You have learned to take each new day with a grain of salt, I think. Live each day to the fullest, because you never know when it's the last. And, Mike is the most normal kid, except for his disability. You have done a great job of teaching him that he can do whatever he can, within his ability. I truly wish with all my heart that you did not need to use a machine to help him cough, but thank God there is such a machine. I hope that you, and all of the others in your house, get well soon. I had a cold for going on 4 weeks!

I hope that you enjoy your vacation. Please take some time to relax.

You and yours are always in my thoughts. Love ya, Toots.

John, Thank you for your kind reply. I never forgot the story of Patrolman Connolly when I first heard it and had wanted to research since that time. Have you read the shorter piece which was more about what happened in the following years? It is entitled 'The Untold Story of Patrolman Connolly' under the category on my blog of Stories of Long Ago. That is incredibly informative as well. I have nobody to thank but the family for their willingness to trust me and to share his story. I am trying to get his picture to add to it. Thank you again. I hope you have luck finding more about your Officer Booth. Thank you also for your service as a Policeman. Sincerly, Suzan Norton
